The
Dawn of Day Camp
In the early part of the 20th Century, a need surfaced
for programming that engaged youth in worthwhile and
beneficial activities during the time when school was
not in session. In response, YMCA day camp was
established in the 1930s. The YMCA movement prepared the
first day camp standards to ensure quality activities
for youth. Day camp remains the YMCA's most popular
program with over 1,550 YMCAs hosting day camps each
year.
From
the beginning, day camp has helped children grow, learn
and discover while emphasizing the four core values -
caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Many YMCAs
also offer specialty camps for children who want to grow
in a more concentrated area such as sports, the arts,
volunteerism or the environment.
The
mission of YMCA day camp has stood the test of time with
many of the original objectives still the focus today.
YMCA day camp is an experience that seeks to cultivate
self-esteem, improve relationships, teach the value of
learning to work with others, promote the importance of
appreciating diversity and develop youth into strong
leaders and citizens.
Beyond Fun and Games
Character development is an integral part of daily
activities at YMCA day camp. Campers participate in a
variety of experiences, which include swimming, arts and
crafts, large-group and small-group activities and
fieldtrips. Even more importantly, campers strengthen
their values, practice new skills and learn more about
their role in keeping their neighborhoods strong. YMCA
day camp programs are designed according to age group
ensuring the best camp experience with activities
tailored to each child's interest.
YMCA day camp is about fun field trips, cool
counselors and making five million friends (well,
almost!). If they come home dirty and tired, they've had
the full day camp adventure!
Experienced
Guides
YMCA day camp's strongest asset continues to be the
dedicated, caring staff team's leadership. The YMCA has
highly qualified and specialized staff, keeping campers
coming back year after year. Counselors are carefully
chosen from education, social work and recreation
programs at a variety of area colleges. The relationship
between a camper and his or her counselor is at the
heart of YMCA day camp success. YMCA camp counselors
provide expert leadership, guidance and friendship to
ensure campers have a fun, memorable experience in a
safe and caring environment.
Something
for Everyone!
YMCA day camp benefits families of all incomes and
backgrounds. Fees are based on the actual cost to
provide the program, and contributed funds are used to
ensure those unable to pay the stated fees are able to
participate. If fees are a concern, please inquire about
financial assistance. All records are kept
confidential, and the form is simple to complete. The
YMCA welcomes all children and youth to participate in
day camp. |
